Magic Happened from one Phone Call
"We need to do something" said the voice on the other end of the phone just over a year ago. Carolyn Griffis had just returned from dropping off clothes at a neighbourhood community centre when she discovered there were actually children in our city going to school each day hungry. This hunger was not only effecting their health but their ability to learn was being impaired. "We need to do something" said Carolyn.
Fast forward to today. What a very special and emotional day it was. It was the official day for the unveiling of the new kitchen at the Toronto First Nations School. Under Carolyn's leadership, this once derelict school kitchen has been transformed into a clean, modern and efficient kitchen. And the kids will now get a healthy start to each day.
From that one phone call magic happened. RE/MAX Hallmark Realtors are now feeding kids from 8 schools each and every school day. The work which Carolyne has led has energized other real estate companies and foundations. RE/MAX Ontario has put their full support behind this special project and we are at the early stages of getting the Toronto Real Estate Board to sign on with some needed help.
The event today was filled with native songs, prayers and happy kids. A school official told me our support of the program was very important, since the community felt it often didn't get much outside support. Our program not only is feeding the kids, but showing support to the community and giving them confidence.
Several Media organizations attended the event. Check out what the National Post had to say.
Truly remarkable, and it all started with one phone call.
