So often I am asked about coaching. Who should I go to, what should I do, can I help?
I have the privilege, and I do mean the privilege of working with so many people in our industry. From agents just getting started, agents in a slump, top producers and broker owners. Other than the fundamental learning curve we all get from the experiences of the business we do, there is a strong common link to fulfillment and greatness in this business.
Unfortunately what I am about to say won’t resinate with a lot of people. We are all, in one way or another looking for the magic fix. The new technique, new way of being to get better. Maybe this new technology will push me to another level, perhaps the design of my flyers, or my website will help make my business that much better.
Sadly it has so very little to do with technology or design. It also has very little to do with knowing and having the right script. I know so many will come down on me for that sentence, but I believe it to be true. A script is useless without emotion, passion and thoughtfulness. And without a unrelenting work ethic.
So what is it that makes people successful in this business we call real estate?
For now forget about all the coaching, or the new this or that. First start with the willingness to get to work, to get out there and get dirty, to make honest mistakes, to talk to people, to ask people for what you want. To be of genuine service to everyone we come in contact with. To work today like there is no tomorrow, To get hungry, to want to succeed. To want to grow. To want to be better, to make a difference. Plant these thoughts securely in your head and get to work.
Work today, and than work tomorrow. and the next day.
“But what can I do?”
Get out of the office and your home and start meeting people, talking to people, engaging people. Some door knock, some join community services centres, other volunteer, others cold call, warm call. Invite people for lunch or coffee (not other realtors) and offer up your services, connect.
If your production is down, if you are running short of cash - get to work. Forget about spending money on new lead generation products, get out and meet people.
Only when you develop the habits of success will you be in a position to tweak your business - to add new elements, to leverage what you do to help you get to the next level.
The greatest asset you or anyone can get from a coach or trainer is to review your success patterns and help you make small changes that bring big results.
So vow today to get to work, to work an honest day, to really try your best. The rest will take care of itself.
Totally agree with you, Ken. Thanks for the reminder as we often need it.
